Leading IP solutions provider Amphion Semiconductor has today confirmed the immediate availability of its new high definition H.264/AVC hardware video decoder core for digital television applications including cable and satellite set-top boxes.
The move is representative of the rapid advancements currently being made in the digital television industry, experts have commented, and should help vastly increase the availability of high quality digital content in the next few years.
"The development is rooted squarely in Amphion's 'sweet spot'," commented Stephen Farson, Amphion's VP Engineering.
"Much more than previous video compression standards, H.264 is exceedingly compute intensive. For practical cost-effective silicon implementations, highly optimized hardware coding engines are a must."
Designed for "ultra high" digital TV performance, according to the firm, the device is likely to trigger an influx of similar high tech digital products.
