Digital TV and broadband redefining home entertainment

26 April 2005

Some of the leading technology manufacturers have spoken out about the rapidly changing nature of home entertainment systems in the UK brought about by advances in the not entirely disparate fields of digital TV and broadband.

As a report by Computer Active points out, the line between computer and TV has become blurred in recent times as digital services and broadband provision are increasingly coalesced to operate in collaboration to provide enhanced viewing please.

Hewlett-Packard is one such firm seizing upon the innovations. Consumer desktop category manager Rob Crampton explained: "HP sees a huge market opportunity in home digital entertainment.

"A number of technologies and products are driving this with connectivity at the heart," he added. "As broadband becomes more established in the home, the PC is moving from the office into the living room."

Andrew Mullen the general manager for communications and new technologies at Korean vendor LG Electronics has echoed these sentiments as well as highlighting the importance of the advent of high-definition television (HDTV) serviced through the internet.

Indeed, this innovation could well be the future of digital TV, experts have suggested, with Sky leading the way in the UK by beginning high-definition broadcasts in time for next year's World Cup.

"HDTV will be the biggest thing since colour, much bigger than DVD replacing video," suggests Darren Lewitt, divisional director at distributor Midwich. "The difference in picture quality is incredible."
