Telewest tests online digital TV

22 June 2005

UK cable provider Telewest has launched a trial allowing broadband users to watch television through their internet connection.

The four channels initially available for viewing contain sport, films and entertainment, and are currently free, though may later use advertising or subscriptions to generate money.

Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer at Telewest Broadband, said: "Not only are we developing on-demand services for our digital TV platform, but we're also able to exploit the potential for video content via the internet.

"Only recently has increasing broadband connection speeds and improvements in encoding technology allowed the continuous streaming of such high quality video."

Another advantage of the service is that the user does not need a TV licence in order to watch this sort of content, provided it is not broadcast at the same time as it is on normal television.
