Digital TV provider to change habits

5 September 2005

Telewest's new digital TV service could soon make traditional commercial break habits a thing of the past, the company has said.

Research from the digital TV, home telephone and broadband provider says that commercial breaks dictate when people eat, talk and make love.

But the company says that Teleport, a new on-demand digital TV service due for release to more than a million customers early next year, will let consumers create their own viewing schedules, "giving greater control over their lifestyles".

Currently, 41 per cent of those surveyed claimed that the time or place they eat is dictated by the television schedule.

More than one in ten (13 per cent) of 18-29 year olds claim they use programme breaks as an opportunity to "get intimate" with a partner.

Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer of Telewest Broadband, said: "Teleport has arrived and it's genuinely going to change the way people watch TV. Our customers will have the choice and convenience of a service they can tailor to fit their timetables - it's TV on their terms."
