Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is the next big thing, and the technology, which allows users to watch digital TV over the internet using a broadband connection, should lead to a fall in prices.
But digital TV provider Sky will prosper from the trend, according to global investment bank Goldman Sachs.
The bank said in a research note, carried by Lovelace Consulting, that broadband telecommunications companies like BT would only compete with cable TV providers for IPTV customers, and that as a satellite operator Sky had nothing to worry about.
The news comes after John Birt's MacTaggart lecture in Edinburgh, at which he predicted a new "battle of the boxes, with BT and Sky likely to be the two Goliaths fighting it out to the death".
With so many ways to receive digital TV, now is the right time to buy.
