Niche channels the key to digital TV success

21 September 2005

Digital TV is soon to explode, with a number and range of channels never seen before available to UK viewers, a new report has said.

An article in Media Week magazine says that cult, or niche, channels have been sprouting up at faster and faster rates and are likely to multiply exponentially over the next few years.

The new diversity, which from next month will include the Baby Channel, enables UK viewers to "get it all on digital TV".

Graham Pittman, chairman of the European Television Guild, told Media Week: "You have to remember that in the US there are 1,673 different channels. There are 83 religious channels alone."

Dave Yorath, managing director of digital TV agency Guerillascope, said: "A lot of channels will start out with morals, but ultimately someone will wave five thousand pounds at them and they will capitulate.

"I think there will always be optimists about who come into the market and launch channels that are never going to work."

"But for those who have been around in the market for several years, they wouldn't still be here if they hadn't learnt how to survive."
