Digital TV changeover threatened

26 September 2005

Government plans to switch the UK over to digital TV by 2012 could be scuppered by analogue rebels, a new report has found.

Advertising agency Mediaedge:cia says that one in five Britons prefers to stick with analogue TV because of the perceived difficulties of switching to digital.

Already the majority of UK households has digital TV, but 20 per cent, mainly the over-65s, do not ever want to adopt the new technology.

The Daily Mail says that reasons for their refusal include confusion, irritation at the cost and "distrust at the need for so many extra channels".

Cost is known to be a problem for some, with most being able to received Freeview for nothing after they buy a set-top box for £30 but some having to pay hundreds of pounds.

However, the benefits of digital TV also need to be made clearer, including the freedom to watch more or less anything at any time.
