Sky digital TV available via broadband

6 December 2005

The satellite broadcaster BSkyB is to offer video from its TV channels to broadband users.

SkyByBroadband will offer customers of Sky Movies and Sky Sports the chance to download content to their personal computers over a broadband connection. The company will provide sports highlights, news clips and even full length films.

Each clip with be recorded at around 860 Kbps in a resolution of 540 by 432. Whilst shorter clips can be streamed by users of faster internet connections, most clips will need to be downloaded. Full length films will take as long as two hours to download on a 1Mbps connection.

The videos, which will play on Windows XP only, will be especially encoded so they can only be watched on the subscribers' computer. Viewers will have a month to watch the files, after which they licence to view will expire.

BSkyB had announced several months ago that it would provide video for mobile phone provider Vodafone's 3G service.

The service, called Sky Mobile TV, promises users the chance to watch some Sky services live whilst being able to download clips from others.
