Two thirds of homes have gone digital

9 December 2005

Digital TV is watched in almost two thirds of homes in the UK, according to figures from Ofcom - further confirming the boom in usage ahead of the imminent analogue switch-off.

According to the broadcast watchdog, 65.9 per cent of households - equating to 16.5 million - now receive digital TV, and this is an increase on 2.9 per cent since June.

Between July and September over a million Freeview boxes were sold, and Sky added 48,000 people to its list of digital satellite subscribers - bringing its overall number of subscribers in this country to 7,472,000..

Digital cable subscribers, in the meantime, increased in number by over 43,000.

Ofcom suggested that the cost of switching to digital TV - a necessity for all between 2008 and 2012 - will be on average £132 per household. People with disabilities and the over 75s will, though, receive assistance from the government.
