8 March 2006

The amount of households that have made the switch to digital television is now around 70 per cent according to culture secretary Tessa Jowell.

At the end of last year, the industry regulator Ofcom announced that 65.9 per cent of households had made the switch to digital television.

Tony Blair encouraged manufacturers and broadcasters to help boost consumer awareness of digital television during a meeting on Tuesday.

He suggested this was especially important in the run-up to analogue shutdown, which is due to take place at the end of the decade.

"Digital switchover is the right policy for Britain and we are delighted that it has the support of the industry," Mr Blair said.

"A great deal of progress has been made so far, but it is vital that we continue to work together to ensure every region of the UK is switched to digital by 2012."

According to Digital UK, the industry body responsible for supervising the switch to digital throughout the country, a recent European Commission report found the UK to be the leading European Union country in terms of the development of digital television.
