UK leads world in digital TV viewing

23 March 2006

The UK is leading the world when it comes to adopting digital television into its homes, according to official figures.

A report from the industry regulator Ofcom found that the UK has the highest digital TV penetration of any country on earth.

Digital television had been adopted by 70% of all households with a television by the end of 2005 - a 4.1% increase from the previous quarter.

More than 2.7 million homes tuned in to digital TV over 2005, bringing the total number of households viewing it to 17.5 million by the end of the year.

Brits embraced the new technology significantly more than their European neighbours, with not a single European country having a digital television take-up of over 50%.

The Welsh were particularly keen on digital, with 80% of the country switching to it by the turn of 2005.

Digital satellite was the most popular way of watching digital television. The study found that there are now more digital satellite viewers than there are homes watching analogue, terrestrial television.
