Up to one million people in the UK will buy a high definition television (HDTV) this year, according to new research.
Continental Research estimated that between 800,000 and one million consumers would make the switch by 2007.
It found that 66% of those asked were aware of what HDTV was, with men being more aware of the new technology than women.
Of those who knew about HDTV, 2% said they already had a HD set, 7% said they were very interested in it and 36% replied that they were 'quite interested'.
Jon Beaumont, director of the research firm, said: "Potentially one million converts to HDTV will certainly please the manufacturers at such an early stage in its evolution."
The fact that a third of those asked had yet to be made aware of the technology may affect its progress, however.
