Government to examine digital TV quiz concerns

20 April 2006

The government has stepped in to deal with concerns over digital TV quiz channels.

The Treasury is now going to decide whether the channels should have to comply with the same rules subjected on gambling outlets.

News of the government examination comes as ITV prepares to launch its new channel ITV Play, which is due to start broadcasting on the Freeview digital TV package.

Viewers are invited to play the quizzes broadcast on the channel by dialling premium-rate phone numbers in an attempt to win prizes.

According to the BBC, the commercial broadcaster itself says that it is acting completely responsibly.

ITV Play will feature quizzes inspired by popular shows such as the soap Coronation Street. No commercials will be shown, with all revenue being generated through the calls of viewers as well as text messages sent to the channel.
