Freeview could carry paid-for channels
The digital terrestrial television service Freeview may be allowed to carry paid-for digital TV channels following new proposals from the industry regulator.
Ofcom said that it intends to deregulate rules dating back to 1996, which currently prevent any paid-for TV channels appearing on Freeview.
"Over six million households now receive a wide choice of programming, on both free-to-air and pay channels. Digital television has also developed significantly on other platforms such as satellite, cable and broadband and almost 18 million UK households now watch digital television," the regulator said.
It said that given this, current restrictions were no longer a matter requiring its involvement.
The market could be left to find the correct balance between paid-for and free television channels, it added.
Rules affecting public service broadcasting channels will be unchanged should the proposal be confirmed. These channels including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five and Public Teletext, will still be prevented from becoming paid-for services.
