£200m campaign launched to help digital switchover

5 May 2006

A £200 million advertising campaign is to begin with the aim of encouraging people to make the switch to digital television.

The campaign will feature the voice of Little Britain star Matt Lucas. He will provide the voice for a robot character called Digit Al.

Those living in the Border TV region will be the first to have their analogue signal turned off. That will take place in 2008, with the entire switchover process due for completion in 2012.

For the first time, the advert will feature on all terrestrial TV channels including the BBC. It will also feature on digital TV channels.

Digital UK chief executive Ford Ennals told the BBC that the digital switchover would be "one of the biggest events in broadcasting history".

"Ensuring everyone is aware of switchover, when it is happening in their region and what they need to do to switch is a major challenge, which is why we have launched this public information campaign," he added.
