Price comparison and switching website uSwitch has commented on the announcement by ntl:Telewest that its new and existing home phone customers are to get free digital TV.
Chris Williams, uSwitch communications expert, stated the deal was an attractive one if consumers live in a cable area and were considering a move to digital TV.
He said: "With the extra choice of channels and interactive "red button" functionality, digital TV offers far more than terrestrial TV. With ntl:Telewest's new offering customer's now have a choice when considering a basic digital TV service.
"Freeview involves a one-off cost of around £40 for the set-top box, which gives the viewer access to around 30 digital channels. ntl:Telewest's new package provides the digital TV for free, with viewers enjoying a number of extra channels than Freeview, including Sky One. Sky charges £15 per month for its basic package, and provides over 200 channels, including all Freeview channels and a number of extras depending on the package bought.
He concluded that with increased competition in the market he expected to see the trend for free products to continue, making it important for customers to understand what they are receiving for their money.
