Exeter will be the first city in the UK to fully switch over to digital TV, it was announced this week.
Digital UK, the body overseeing the switch from analogue to digital television, has announced that Exeter, as well as south east Devon, west Dorset and south west Somerset, will switch over in the second quarter of 2009.
The Borders region is the first area in the UK to be making the switch in 2008, but Carlisle, its only major city, will not be completely digital until after Exeter.
Ford Ennals, the chief executive of Digital UK, said: "The announcement of the timetable for transmitter switchover in the West country, Wales and Granada TV regions is another milestone on the UK's path to digital TV.
"Nearer the time, we will announce the month and day of switchover. We intend to share information with the public as soon as possible, and to provide public information and practical assistance to the public throughout the process."
Transmitters in the south and south west of Wales will be switched over in the third quarter of 2009, those in the north east and north west in the fourth quarter and the entire country will be digital by the end of March 2010.
The Granada region, including Merseyside, Manchester and Cheshire, will be switched over during the fourth quarter of 2009.
London will not switch until the first half of 2012.
