Ofcom: 3 in 4 now own digital TV

22 December 2006

Three in four households now watch digital television on their main TV set, an Ofcom report reveals.

The summer months saw a spurt in digital viewing as 800,000 households moved over to viewing digital on their main set.

Second and third TV sets are going digital too, as eight million second sets are connected up to receive digital by September 2006, twice as many as in September 2005.

Digital satellite is the most popular platform for viewing digital on primary sets, with nearly 40 per cent of UK TV homes signed up to BSkyB or free-to-view satellite services.

The summer period also saw growth in cable provision, but the figures are less impressive.

Between July and September, 22,000 households signed up to cable, the highest number of new customers within a three-month period for over two years.

Both sets of figures partly reflect the surge in viewing during the World Cup – but digital is clearly where the real growth market is.
