A code of practice has been published by Ofcom to advise broadcasting companies how best to manage the transitional period between analogue TV switching to digital TV to minimise the loss of programming to viewers.
The timetable for the switchover varies between regions in the UK, with the first areas changing to digital starting next year and the rest of the nation catching up by 2012.
Ofcom said that it has two primary aims of its code of practice; firstly, to ensure that viewers who are normally covered by existing analogue and digital terrestrial television services receive minimal disruption to the reception of these services during the transition.
Secondly, it wants to ensure that broadcasters use a variety of mitigation techniques, including optimising the design of the antennas and adjusting the power of interfering services, in order to minimise the impact of digital switchover on UK viewers.
The regulatory body is now appealing to broadcasters and the public for its views on its draft 'Code of Practice on Changes to Existing Transmission and Reception Arrangements'. The closing date for responses is March 6th 2007.
