Virgin Media exerts first strike in digital TV

16 February 2007

The Branson versus Murdoch war has kicked off spectacularly with Virgin Media now offering to undercut Sky's digital TV prices by £70 per year.

Virgin Media's sports package will cost £70 less than the equivalent Sky version, offering consumers a fantastic deal as well as providing Sky with some much-needed competition in the digital TV sector.

Steve Weller, Head of Communications Services at independent price comparison and switching service uSwitch.com, said that Virgin Media boss Branson was "certainly giving Murdoch a run for his money" in his attempt to draw customers into his underground world of cable.

However, Sky could yet come out on top as it still has the power to pull the plug on Virgin Media's rights to Sky One and Sky Sports News which is currently on show to ten million Virgin Media customers.

Mr Weller advised consumers looking to switch to "proceed with caution" as although Virgin Media's deal offered great value-for-money, content negotiations were "far from over".
