Tiscali trounces rivals with new triple-play package

26 February 2007

March 1st marks the launch of Tiscali's broadband, digital TV and phone bundle priced at just £19.99 per month for its basic 30-channel package.

This triple-play package costs significantly less than several of Tiscali's rivals' alternatives, with Virgin's recently launched triple-play currently costing £30 a month while Sky's equivalent is priced at £37.

Tiscali TV, the digital TV package made out of the remnants of Homechoice which Tiscali took over in August, will begin its roll-out in Homechoice's home turf of London and Stevenage, Hertfordshire, before adding services in Birmingham, Edinburgh and Newcastle during April and May and areas of Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool by the summer.

Mary Turner, Chief Executive of Tiscali UK, told the Guardian: "We believe there is a real gap in the market for our TV product. The success of Freeview has shown that customers want more than five channels but don't necessarily want to pay a high monthly subscription.

"Our TV service gives customers broadband plus the channel choice they want, all for the price you would pay for a standard broadband connection."

However, Steve Weller, Head of Communications Services at the price comparison and switching website uSwitch.com, warned that Tiscali would have to roll-out its package quickly in order to gain the full benefits from being the cheapest triple-play provider on the market.

"The fact that it doesn't offer some of Sky's channels will limit its appeal," he said. "However, for those looking for a basic TV package, home phone and 2Mb broadband connection, the price is certainly attractive."
