Grade calls for HDTV for Freeview

24 April 2007

ITV Chief Executive Michael Grade has called for high-definition (HD) TV to be made available to all consumers.

The former Chairman of the board of governors at the BBC was last week responding to Ofcom's decision to sell high-definition air space, a move which the 63-year-old said might hinder the ability of consumers to benefit from the format.

Mr Grade identified how the ongoing switchover to a digital television format by 2012 could enable all consumers to be provided with HD television, which would allow consumers to enjoy better pictures and sound.

Speaking to the campaign group Voice of the Viewer, Mr Grade explained how the UK had enjoyed a "long and honourable tradition" of ensuring that "everyone has access to the same quality of broadcasting and to the main public service broadcasting channels".

A number of television channels, including BBC, ITV and Channel 4, have subscribed to the views held by Mr Grade, as part of the HDforAll campaign.
