BskyB gains 90000 new subscribers

11 July 2007

BskyB has announced 90,000 new customers have joined its existing customer base from the three months to the end of June.

This figure is up 17% on the same time last year - positive news for the satellite broadcaster who has attributed its success to the recent launch of its broadband service.

Furthermore, the total number of new customer sign ups across all its services stood at 349,000, with 716,000 broadband customers and 8.58 million customers in total.

The firm also revealed positive results in terms of the number of people leaving its services - or churn - falling from 13.7% to 12.1%.

BSkyB Chief Executive James Murdoch said: "Today we are adding new customers at the fastest rate since analogue switch-off; we are adding more broadband customers than any other provider; and we are the only major residential telephony provider growing its customer base."

In other news, BSkyB is currently being investigated by the Competition Commission over whether its stake in ITV contravenes news diversity legislation.

It is also embroiled in a long-running public debate with VirginMedia over payment for some of BSkyB's basic channels.

Failure to come to an agreement meant VirginMedia customers experiencing channels such as Sky One, and programmes including Lost and 24, being pulled from their screens.
