There could be fresh problems for Virgin Media today after the announcement that the company's Chief Executive has resigned.
The firm revealed that Steve Burch has left his position with immediate effect due to "family and personal reasons" and will be returning back to his native US.
Neil Berkett, the cable broadcaster's Chief Operating Officer, will serve as Acting Chief Executive in the interim period.
Mr Burch joined the company in 2006, leading the company through the merger and tie-up with ntl and Telewest as well as the acquisition of Virgin Mobile and the rebranding of the firm as Virgin Media.
The former Chief Executive has seen the company go through a difficult few months. Recently the firm hit the headlines due to a public row with rival broadcaster BSkyB over payment for some of its most popular channels.
The firm has also suffered from a drop in customer numbers, with many industry figures hoping customers will return to the firm if a potential £5.5 billion deal with an unknown bidder is successful.
"Steve has contributed significantly to the transformation of Virgin Media," the company's Chairman Jim Moody said.
"Since he joined us, the company has emerged as the UK's only 'quad play' provider and a genuinely distinctive presence in the world of communications and entertainment."
He added: "On behalf of Virgin Media's Board of Directors, I thank him for his contribution to our development and wish him every success for the future."
