Signalling the further expansion of digital radio technology into the mainstream, Ofcom announced a new DAB licence for Oxfordshire yesterday.
NOWdigital (Oxford) submitted the winning bid - and is set to provide eight separate stations to local residents, including six music services.
"This is one of a number of new local radio multiplex licences planned to develop DAB coverage for services in those parts of the country not already served," the watchdog said in a statement.
"This licensing process will lead to a significant expansion in digital radio services throughout the UK."
Ofcom's announcement follows the conformation of digital's growing popularity in latest Radio Joint Audience Research (Rajar) figures.
Director of BBC Audio & Music Jenny Abramsky said at the time: "The continued growth of digital radio is once again the highlight of the quarter.”
The Oxfordshire stations are set to be launched by the end of next year.
