Chains announce end of analogue TV sales

A further milestone in the UK's transition to digital TV has been marked, with a major electronics retailer announcing that it will no longer sell old-style analogue sets.

Dixons Store Group, which runs the Dixons.co.uk, Currys and PC World high street chains, said late last week that it will be moving to a digital-only range.

Justifying this decision, the retailer said that nine in ten TV sales in 2007 was for a digital rather than an analogue set.

However, 32% of sets currently in use in Britain are analogue-only. "We are concerned at the high volumes of analogue televisions still on sale in the UK and we favour early transition to a digital only range," said Peter Keenan, managing director of Currys.

"We believe that it is appropriate to ensure that our customers are able to select from a future-proof range of televisions."

The digital switchover began last year in Cumbria, and is set to continue on a region-by-region basis until complete in 2012.
