Staffordshire warned over digital TV crime

23 April 2008

Many vulnerable people may be at risk of crime during the digital TV switchover period, police in Staffordshire have claimed.

Officers stated that while there have so far been no instances of doorstep thieves attempting to trick those such as the elderly, this type of burglary may be considered in the future, reported the Express & Star.

Staffordshire police Neighbourhood Watch official Vicki Singleton warned residents that potential criminals may try to take advantage of the perplexity surrounding the television signal changes.

She told the news source: "We suspect criminals will pick up on the digital changeover and try their luck - it makes sense that criminals who try to trick people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, will latch on to this."

And Ms Singleton stated that the possibility ought to be taken "seriously" and that effectively anybody may be targeted.

It is hoped that the switchover to digital services in the UK will be completed by 2012, when the analogue signal will be removed.
