New digital service released

6 May 2008

A fresh digital TV service has been launched with the intention of offering consumers access to free services.

In total, about 80 channels are likely to be available via Freesat, while more could be added by the end of this year.

Operators claimed that Freesat will be a good alternative for users that find it difficult to obtain Freeview because of poor reception.

Emma Scott from the organisation said that the choice available to Britons has improved.

"You can receive Freesat across the country, which means that in those areas that at the moment can't get access to free digital television this is the first time that you can get free digital TV," she told BBC Radio 5 Live.

High definition programmes are set to be available via the new equipment, which is accessible through a set-top box.

Last week, police offers in Lancashire revealed that a number of digital boxes had been confiscated as part of a raid into illegal television channels.
