'Repeat prescriptions' over mobile

15 May 2008

Consumers in the UK will now be able to obtain repeat prescriptions over their mobile telephones or digital televisions via a new service.

DigiTV is to offer the free solution through the Looking Local portal and has been developed in collaboration with EMIS, reports the British Journal of Healthcare, Computing and Information Management.

In total about 1,400 surgeries in the UK have so far taken advantage of the new technology, so that eight million people can obtain the fresh ordering channels.

Business Strategy and Access Manager at Kirklees council who looks after Looking Local, Steve Langrick, stated that these are modern and important developments.

"Efficient access to health-related services is important to so many people and any time that can be freed-up through developments such as repeat prescriptions allows for that time to be re-invested for the benefit of patients," he commented.

This week CPP officials stated that a pin function on mobile telephones may limit the amount of information thieves can access.
