New transmitter proposed for town

20 May 2008

A new TV transmitter is to be installed in the Lancashire town of Skelmersdale in the run-up to the new digital era.

The move is set to be enforced after local MP Rosie Cooper got in touch with regulator Ofcom to do something about the predicted problems, reports the Ormskirk Advertiser.

She said that poor coverage incidents date back to the eighties and nineties, when relay transmitters were put in place.

"I've now had assurances from Ofcom that they are looking to install an additional relay transmitter, subject to planners being able to find clear frequencies in the areas needed," she commented.

Ofcom had suggested itself that 1,500 to 3,500 homes could be hit when the existing analogue signal is switched off in 2009.

A site is now being researched where the proposed transmitter can be installed.

This week is was revealed that Ofcom is also to undertake discussions with locals in the Welsh village of Gwytherin to talk about alleged disruption with the BT network there.
