Minister looks to remove digital fears

7 July 2008

A politician has moved to dampen fears that it will be impossible to obtain digital TV in the Skelmersdale area next year. Following a question about digital services there by MP Rosie Cooper, Culture Minister Andy Burnham stated that a fresh transmitter has to be provided before the analogue signal is removed, reports the Skelmersdale Advertiser. Ofcom has previously said that the region could face poor quality reception as it moves from this type of signal to a digital one. "I understand that the process is likely to be completed as planned, subject to the availability of a suitable site, local planning permission and the allocation of suitable frequencies," he commented. Mr Burnham added that he will pay close attention to the problem and see that any worries are stamped out. The date for switchover in Devon was recently revealed by Digital UK, with people there having to obtain modern services by June 1st 2009.
