'Growth' in digital TV market

15 July 2008

More than two-thirds of consumers in the UK with televisions now have access to digital services, it has been revealed. In the first quarter of this year, the number of digital-enabled sets grew from 33.5 million to 40.5 million, compared to the corresponding period in 2007, Ofcom noted in its latest report. And the amount of households to switch to digital solutions jumped from 86.5% to 87.2% in the first three months of the year. Ofcom added that three million digital terrestrial television equipment sales were seen in this quarter, a rise of 116% on the opening quarter last year. Digital subscribers with Sky hit 8.3 million households, having grown by 332,000 during the same length of time. Service provider BT has questioned the role that Sky plays in the digital market and said that more regulation should be adopted in the pay television sector. The comments came as the company launched a new package that will enable people to receive Setanta Sports 1 for nothing.
