The digital TV switchover is already underway but many consumers still do not understand the implications of the conversion scheme, MPs have warned. A report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) claims public information campaigns about the switchover have not worked and people are still confused. Digital-ready TVs have been on sale for some time but the report points out that many consumers are still buying analogue TVs. Following the switchover, when analogue signals are turned off, these TVs will not work unless extra equipment is purchased. "The evidence is that the digital tick label with which digital televisions are flagged in shops is a mystery to many retail staff, let alone the people to whom they sell TVs," said PAC chairman Edward Leigh. However, Liberal Democrat culture, media and sport spokesman Don Foster said it is hardly surprising that so many analogue TVs are still being sold because even with a separate set-top box they are still cheaper than digital TVs. Meanwhile the broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has suggested that the TV licence fee may fall in price once the digital switchover is complete.
