Freesat has won an award for Best Contribution to Digital TV in the UK, beating off competition from Virgin Media. The digital TV service from the BBC and ITV was recognised for its potential to bring high definition programming to millions of viewers "at an economical cost". Digital TV Group and Pace, which created the awards, said Freesat would play an important role in the digital switchover. Commenting on the win, Emma Scott, Managing Director of Freesat, said: "We are very much a vital piece in the future development of UK television." For a one-off installation payment, Freesat offers over 130 digital TV and radio channels and airs some BBC and ITV programmes in high definition each month. It is just one of the options available to consumers ahead of the switch to digital TV, which began this year and will continue TV region by TV region until 2012.
