Full-scale digital switchover carried out in Scottish Borders

21 November 2008

Phase two of the UK's first full-scale digital TV switchover was completed yesterday when analogue signals were switched off in the Scottish Borders.

Analogue BBC Two was turned off in the Selkirk transmitter region earlier this month and digital BBC channels broadcast in its place.

Now, all other terrestrial channels have been replaced with digital alternatives including ITV2, ITV3, E4 and digital text services.

John Askew of Digital UK said: "I'm pleased to report that the technical transition has gone smoothly and from today many more viewers will be able to receive digital TV free via an aerial."

Other regions throughout the UK will be switched in this way, with two stages of the process taking place before all analogue signals disappear for good.

Meanwhile, a new report by the communications regulator Ofcom reveals that the UK is leading the way in terms of the take-up of digital TV around the world.
