Sky launches online digital TV package

5 December 2008

Sky is launching a new service that will give consumers access to some of its digital TV channels without having a satellite dish installed in their home.

A range of channels - including MTV, Sky Sports and National Geographic - will be available to watch online through a special internet package.

Existing Sky customers will be able to watch programmes on the Sky Player for free and subscribe to some extra on-demand content.

Viewers who do not have a Sky subscription can pay a monthly fee to access the online service. Fees will depend on the level of content required.

Mike Darcey, Chief Operating Officer at BSkyB, said: "Sky Player TV recognises that for some, the computer is now the preferred screen to watch TV."

According to Brand Republic, research from the TV marketing body Thinkbox shows that 64 per cent of broadband internet users now watch TV online on a weekly basis.
