Satellite broadcaster Sky claims to have successfully tested the delivery of 3D programmes to homes via high-definition digital TV set-top boxes.
The company says that by using 3D cameras for filming, viewers can watch programmes in 3D using special polarising glasses, the BBC reports.
Previous trials have brought 3D programming to viewers in theatres, but Sky insists it is close to delivering the technology to domestic residences.
"We have shown it is a technical reality," Sky's Director of Strategic Product Development, Gerry O'Sullivan, told the news provider. "Now we have to find a way to bring it to viewers."
As well as 3D glasses, 3D televisions would also be required, which are not yet available in the UK. However, Mr O'Sullivan points to the fast growth of high-definition TVs as evidence that 3D sets could also catch on.
Sky recently launched an online digital TV service that allows viewers to subscribe to Sky programmes without having a satellite dish installed in their home.
