CNN to air on Freeview

13 January 2009

From Thursday January 15th, Freeview customers will be able to receive the US news channel CNN seven days a week.

The channel will air on Freeview 84 between the hours of 21:00 GMT and 01:00 GMT, the Guardian reports.

Its launch on the free-to-air service comes just days before the inauguration of the newly-elected US president Barack Obama on January 20th.

Viewers can watch the day's events on UK news channels BBC News and Sky News, but the addition of CNN will allow for even more choice.

CNN said it made the move to Freeview in order to meet the growing demand for world news with a "global perspective" among UK consumers.

Tony Maddox, Executive Vice-President and Managing Director at CNNI, said: "UK viewers will be able to enjoy not only our signature global news and feature programming but also a slate of new programmes we're developing for Europe prime time."

A report published by Continental Research in October revealed that 13% of UK consumers planned to get Freeview at some point over the next 12 months.
