Sky obtains live football rights

5 February 2009

Satellite broadcaster BSkyB has won four out of the six packages of live Premier League football rights for the 2010-2013 seasons. It was one of a number of companies that submitted bid for the audio-visual rights. A second round of bidding will take place for the remaining two packages. Each package consists of 23 live games per season, meaning that Sky will show 92 each year - the same number as it currently shows. A source close to the bidding told the Financial Times that while the exact sum put forward by Sky is as yet unknown, it must have been a good offer. "The only reason you would accept at such a stage would be if it was a really good knockout offer," he remarked. Sky is today (February 5th) celebrating its 20th birthday, having first launched on this day in 1989 with just four channels, TechRadar reports. It merged with British Satellite Broadcasting in 1990 to become British Sky Broadcasting.
