Watching high definition television (HDTV) can help to improve psychological wellbeing and combat "downturn depression", it has been claimed.
According to research carried out by satellite broadcaster Sky together with psychologist Donna Dawson, the visual and auditory effects of HDTV can stimulate key parts of the brain.
Colour, music and laughter can all have mood-enhancing properties, while programmes can also be inspirational or provide some sense of escapism.
As the economy heads into a recession and people continue to lose their jobs, HDTV could therefore help to boost moods, Sky claims.
"Colour research reveals bright colours lift your mood and help the viewer to feel more positive, excited, happy or relaxed," explained Ms Dawson.
Sky+HD has launched a new Happier Days Guide this month that highlights those programmes that are likely to have the biggest impact on psychological wellbeing.
According to a report by NPA Conseil and Euroconsult, some 170 million European households will have HDTV sets by 2013 - up from 59 million today.
