3D TV to become a reality?

Further investment into 3D technology is looking likely for BSkyB, if reports are to be believed.

A senior official at Sky said at a recent conference that 61 Hollywood movies are likely to be released in 3D format over the next 18 months, with the service also likely to be in homes "by year-end".

"We want to deliver the first generation of 3D and I envision it will be glasses-based in some form and to get the impetus going for that first generation," Chris Johns, Sky's Engineering Chief, revealed.

He told the Digital TV Group's annual conference that the 3D techniques need to be refined along with high definition technology so set top boxes can be modified, not replaced.

Earlier this year, Richard Holway, Chairman of TechMarketView, said the recession is likely to lead to the uptake of new technologies.

He added that acceleration may also be seen, with big companies encouraged to invest in "new ways of doing things".
