Despite many people being aware of HDTV, only one in ten is prepared to buy a new television set this year, it is claimed.
Out of those questioned by Buckingham Research, 85% said they were aware of HDTV, while 14% were aware but did not understand it.
"The real challenge lies in getting consumers to trial the service, as a large proportion are converted once they have experienced it," says Paul Nola, Managing Director at Buckingham Research.
She adds that people's perceptions of the service are hampering its implementation, with service providers and manufacturers called upon to make consumers see its benefits.
Nearly half of respondents agreed that HDTV made their viewing more enjoyable, while 45% believe there needs to be more channels.
At present, there are a number of digital television services available which offer a whole host of additional channels.
A recent Ofcom report found that paying for extra channels is growing in popularity.
