ITV 'in talks' to charge for digital channels

3 June 2009

ITV is said to be undergoing discussions with Sky to make its additional channels part of a paid-for service, meaning they would no longer be available to Freeview viewers.

This would mean that channels such as ITV2 would no longer be available to Freeview viewers after ITV reported a downturn in the advertising revenues used to fund them.

Content on ITV2 has proved popular with audiences accessing it through Freeview, with the likes of American Idol pulling in the viewers.

In April, Ofcom revealed that nearly half of households are now using paid-for TV services, as figures for the fourth quarter of last year showed an increase in interest.

The survey found that in the last three months of 2008, 49% of people used such services, increasing from 48.6% in the previous quarter.
