Five awarded HD licence

15 June 2009

Ofcom has announced it has awarded an HD licence to Channel 5, giving viewers the chance to watch enhanced content through Freeview channels.

The service will become available next year providing the broadcaster adheres to certain criteria by the end of 2009.

Phillip Graf, Chairman of Ofcom's Content Board, commented: "This means more choice for TV viewers who will be able to watch in high definition some of the very best of British programming, free to air through their television aerials."

Ofcom revealed that viewers will be able to see some of the channel's most popular programmes - including the Gadget Show and the UEFA Europa League - in HD late next year.

Ofcom announced that there would be no changes to the amount of advertising on TV when it recently conducted a review.
