Residential energy bills "needlessly high"

8 March 2005

Typical annual residential electricity bills could be cut by over £200 if consumers in the UK adopted simple energy saving habits.

This is the opinion of the Friends of the Earth organisation which yesterday released its 'save cash and save the planet' guide detailing how on average, consumers could save a total of £80,000 during their lifetime by leading a 'greener' lifestyle.

"Being good to the planet can be good for your budget and improve the quality of your life too," said Friends of the Earth executive director Tony Juniper.

"Small steps such as turning down the thermostat, switching to energy efficient light bulbs or driving a fuel efficient car will save cash and help the environment by reducing our impact on climate change.

Friends of the Earth recommends installing electricity saving light bulbs, which last around 12 times longer than standard bulbs and use 75 per cent less energy. This could see consumers save £65 over the lifespan of the bulb.

Reducing the thermostat on your boiler to 60 degrees centigrade, rather than add cold water to baths and washing up, could also help save another £10 a year, the organisation added.

Another way to save money on household energy bills is to use the uSwitch.com energywatch accredited calculator to find the best gas and electricity supplier for your household.
