Energy minister Mike O'Brien has reiterated his backing for the plans to introduce a new integrated electricity market that will help lower energy prices in Scotland and provide a welcome renewables boost.
The plans should see Scotland's transmission networks aligned to the grids in England and Wales, opening up lucrative new markets for Scottish generators allowing cheaper bills to be issued to consumers.
"Scottish generators are set to benefit from the new single transmission system because, for the first time, they'll have real access to the wider British market, without the added complexity of negotiating and paying for the use of the existing interconnector between the two networks," commented Mr O'Brien.
"For Scottish consumers, opening up competition will provide greater choice and see the sort of downward pressure on prices previously enjoyed by consumers in England and Wales."
Designs to create a single wholesale electricity market were originally unveiled last year and these new arrangements, which come into force on April 1st, represent a positive step towards this target.
