Industry watchdog Energywatch is to be absorbed into a new consumer "super-champion", according to reports.
The Telegraph newspaper writes today that the government's plans to merge the current system will create a new body combining a variety of roles and existing operations.
Groups currently working independently such as Postwatch, the National Consumer Council and the Rail Passengers Council will all subsequently collaborate under one roof.
The proposals will increase the watchdog's overall powers plus industry influence and could be officially decided upon by chancellor Gordon Brown at the forthcoming election, although this is far from set in stone.
"We are still working out whether to press the button next week," said a government member.
Energywatch is the independent watchdog for gas and electricity consumers and offers customers advice on a variety of industry issues such as pricing and service levels.
