Consumers urged to request energy bill allowances

23 March 2005

Homeowners in the UK are being urged to claim their entitled energy bill allowance payments ahead of the March 30th cut off date.

Leading independent comparison and switching service uSwitch.com has reminded consumers aged 60 and over to act now to help account for rising prices which has seen the likes of ScottishPower, Powergen and EDF all augment prices this year.

Alan Tattersall, director of home services at uSwitch.com, commented: "This is money customers are legally entitled to and can go a long way towards helping ease the burden of fuel bills, especially after the recent cold snap we've experienced.

"It's likely that customers could face bills up to £60 higher than this time last year so it really is vital that they submit their winter fuel allowance forms in time.

"In addition, consumers should check they are receiving value for money from their current electricity and gas suppliers. The payment will stretch a lot further if they switch to a cheaper energy supplier."

The government has so far made £200 lump sums available to those over 60 with people aged over 80 entitled to an extra £100 payment.
