uSwitch offers calculator to help limit water bills

New research has shown that homeowners in the UK are wasting up to £1.8 billion per year by sticking with fixed water bills.

Leading independent comparison firm uSwitch.com has recently launched a new water calculator that the firm believes could help save around £125 for 14.5 million water customers.

Alan Tattersall, director of home services at uSwitch.com, commented: "People don't register that there are huge savings to be made by installing a water meter and unlike energy, you can't simply switch your supplier to a cheaper one.

"Currently water bills are worked out using the rateable value of the house - a rather antiquated combination of the type, location and value of the property. Yet in many cases, it can be much cheaper to switch to a water meter and only pay for what you use, as with gas and electricity."

Mt Tattersall added that there perhaps has never been a better time for consumers to change their water bill mindsets.

"Being more water efficient can also slash bills and this is set to become all the more important in light of recent reports about the alarmingly low water levels in UK reservoirs," he concluded.

Research has suggested only one in four households in the UK are currently use a money saving water meter device.
