Consumers in the UK should install water meters to help reduce bills and wastage, according to water consumer group WaterVoice.
The group's recommendation follows that suggested by a number of water firms recently and adds weight to the growing importance of the meters.
Sir James Perowne, WaterVoice Central's chairman, commented: "We have helped many customers who have clearly benefited from lower bills after having a meter fitted.
"Bill payers have the choice to opt for a meter and should not face unnecessary barriers when opting to pay on a metered basis."
Figures have suggested that water metering could lower household water consumption by an average of nine per cent each year as well as reducing the growing need to implement hose pipe and sprinkler bans each summer.
